A Voice for Scottish Islands
Small Isles Community Council on behalf of Scottish Islands Network
contact: Camille.d@talk21.com

This is a joint project with Western isles, Skye & Lochalsh. The aim of the project was to hold a conference on the Isle of Mull in early 2007 bringing together approximately 100 key representatives from island communities, agencies and local and national government to discuss, review and agree the formation of a permanent and inclusive body representing the interests of all Scottish Islands. The conference would include presentations from other established island networks, which may include the Global Islands Network, the Irish Islands Federation, the Swedish National Archipelago Association and the European Small Islands Network.

The principal aim of this conference was to create a widely supported structure through which island communities can help themselves by working in partnership with each other to find common solutions to shared problems, and by collectively influencing policy which affects their social, economic and environmental sustainability. This project aimed to create a powerful voice for the Scottish Islands which will:
1. Publicise the interests of island communities within governmental and policy-making bodies.
2. Promote equality of opportunity and seek to raise awareness of the permanent geographical handicaps that affect island communities.
3. Promote better links between local authorities and government agencies with responsibilities for islands.
4. Promote better links between community and voluntary organisations and businesses on Scottish islands.
